Winter 2001 WELCOME
A warm welcome to you, here with this Winter's ArtLetter. There's a lot going on, as you'll see - I invite you to explore the links into other parts of the website that appear below. And it's the website itself that's the biggest news - those of you who have been here before will see a completely new look. A lot more content has been added, and features to help make your visit here enjoyable as well as educational. Please let me know how it works for you - on any page, click on the poste box titled CONNECTING to send e-mail.

There's more background on the opera pages, with something for the new opera-goer as well as the seasoned veteran... everything from why opera has endured for 400+ years to stories of the operas to a pop-up glossary of opera terms. There's more of the how as well as the what, and the section on the Tenor Book has been greatly expanded. Click on the OPERA button when you get to the bottom of this page for more.

Another section that's been expanded and enhanced is the group of pages featuring perhaps the oldest and most elemental of art forms, the dance. Click on DANCERS to begin your explorations there.

Brand new with the re-design of the website is a Gallery of painting, more phtography, and computer graphics, all with my notes about the ongoing process of creating this work. Please explore THE WEB GALLERY.

And of course there are books, and more books! The Young Person's Guide to the Opera has recently been published, and features some of my photographs made with San Diego Opera. Take a look at this delightful book in the expanded WORDS & MUSIC SHOP - and you'll find so much more. Guidelines, history, and recommendations of my own favorites in music, books, and video to entice you to explore opera, dance, and photography. Bon voyage!

Cheers!  -Martha Hart

KEEPING UP WITH ML HART

ML Hart, the award-winning author/photographer, is always up to something. Martha's been "relaxing" during San Diego Opera's off-season time. ...
She’s the Curator / Artistic Consultant for The Memory Wall on the campus of University of California, San Diego. It’s a museum-style permanent installation on the walls outside the Main Ballroom of the Price Center, spanning 22 feet on one side, 60 feet on the other, and all of it 6 feet high – a montage of photographs and text exploring the rich heritage of 40+ years of UCSD’s beginnings and achievements. It will be finished by the end of 2001. ...
She's provided most of the stills for San Diego Opera's Spotlight program about composer Carlisle Floyd. UCSD-TV put the show together, with Nicolas Reveles doing the interview honors. Inexplicably, no one seems to have many photographs of Carlisle, but with her behind-the-scenes stalking through rehearsals with her cameras, Martha has a visual archive of him working with singers, conferring with conductors, and presenting new works at the piano, work that spans several years. Explore features on Carlisle Floyd's operas on this website by clicking on the AT THE OPERA button, below, and see the power he brings to the stage in Of Mice and Men, The Passion of Jonathan Wade, and Cold Sassy Tree. ...
She’s continuing work on her newest book, TENORS: Passion & Glory at the Opera. This is a behind-the-scenes look at how those guys with the million-dollar voices create the onstage magic that thrills audiences the world over. The secret? It’s … well, why not explore the Tenor pages for yourself, and find out. ...
She's starting work on a book of opera heroines and heroes for girls and boys, retelling the traditional stories for today's world, focusing on the intelligence, courage and resourcefulness of the characters. ...
She’s writing a play about one woman’s journey of discovering and coping with breast cancer. Based in part on a friend’s journal kept during the last year of her life, this is something that touches us all. The idea of this work began more than five years ago - a book of photographs was the first concept, but it seemed hollow without conducting interviews to tell the stories, not just of one woman, but of all the women and men whose lives are transformed. This is a project that has been on the back burner, simmering away. The change to a play format allows for a fuller exploration of the complexities of emotions, and is incorporating traditional theatrical forms such as the soliloquy and a Greek-style chorus. Ever written a play before, Martha? No... but then I'd never written a book before, either! Watch for more on this as the year goes along. ...
Finally, she’s gearing up for another season as Artist-in-Residence at San Diego Opera, uniquely documenting the work done onstage and off by the hundreds of artists involved in making opera. And she’ll be photographing with Malashock Dance again this year, too.
