TENORS - Passion and Glory at the
Opera
ML Hart focuses her unique perspective on tenors of the worlds opera stages
today to find what it takes to make it in the operatic world the perils and the
rewards of surviving and excelling. Talent alone is not enough: it takes a combination of
a splendid voice, determination, strength, skill, and some luck, to make a great career.
And when the voice is right, there is no more thrilling sound. Black and white
photographs of the process of rehearsing, combined with in-depth interviews and comments
from dozens of both active and retired artists in the world of music, bring the tenor
voice to life.
1998 - 2001:
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE -
Photography: San Diego Opera
ML Hart continues her documentary work behind the scenes and in rehearsal with the
Company. She will also be exploring special photographic projects by way of hand-coloring,
transfers, and computer-enhanced work.
1995 - 1997:
THE OPERA PROJECT: "The Art of
Making Opera"
In cooperation with San Diego Opera, this is a "documentary portrait" in
black-and-white photography of an entire season of a major opera company the
people, the work, the collaborative and creative nature of all members of the company,
onstage and off. The intent is to visualize the nature of the process not
just the result of creating art, whether that art is opera, photography, or a part
of anyones everyday life.

INSIDE THE MUSIC: "A
Portrait of Jazz"
Working with contemporary jazz musicians, this is a lifelong exploration of all the
senses of music for we experience the passions and emotion generated by music in
ways that go far beyond hearing alone. Black-and-white film is used to remove the
distraction of literal colors, and to bring out the subtle shades of "color" in
the instruments, in the light, in hands and faces. "Inside the Music" is a
photographic suite of portraits of the instruments and artists who make music and
ultimately a portrait of the music itself.

TEXTURES OF RUSSIA
The artist first visited Russia in the mid-1970s, when the Cold War was active and
tourists were shadowed by KGB. Russia is a land of astonishing beauty and has a power that
comes from centuries of history and faith. Her second visit in May 1993, the year of the
collapse of the political structure, revealed an entirely different society, one that is
still struggling to blend ancient memories with the modern world. This series, in both
black & white and color, gives a glimpse into the serenity and strength found in the
land and the churches, the same serenity and strength that define the Russian people
themselves.
PAPERWORKS

THE PRICE OF INDEPENDENCE
ML Hart uses paperworks to explore the non-visual concepts of feminism: memory,
connectivity, and sensuality are all components of independence, and the price can often
be loneliness, She makes sheets of paper by hand from native plant fibers along with
cotton and flax. With that as a foundation, paint, glass, and cold-forged metal are
combined in structured collage. Color, texture and form are used in the abstract, invoking
a visceral emotional response in and of itself that does not need mere words to convey its
meaning.
