is a representation
not of what the eye sees, but of what the soul seeks."

| . . . WELCOME FROM ML HART . . . |
|
Most every artist I know likes to talk
about work, in part because artists' work is so personal - it's an extension of who we
really are. I find the more personal I allow my work to be, the more satisfying it is to
explore/create, and the more successful it is - success being measured here by
how strongly my viewers connect with the work.
Self-evaluation, taking stock, identifying my feelings as
an artist ... it's as much a part of what I do as any of the technical details with
cameras or paints ... or budgeting or promotion. It can sometimes sound very 'cosmic' when
I try to translate something that's complex and visceral into words on a page. I would
like the combination of words and images here to help explain the sometimes-indefinable
visual nature of what I do. It's not always easy - putting yourself out there - but the
results are worth finding the courage to do it.
Many people who look at my work in an art gallery want to
know more... how was it created? what was I thinking? how should they react? The answer to
the last question is that you should open yourself up and find out how you feel when you
look at the work - does it make you feel... something? does it make you cry or
wonder or think? And the answers to the first questions are here on this website.
Technology allows me to connect with a worldwide audience for instant-gratification
feedback ... what could be better?
Try starting with What's New.
I hope you'll help me make this a two-way site experience. No artist's work is really
whole until that audience/viewer/listener loop is completed. Please write me with comments
or questions... sign up to receive e-mail updates and to be notified about new works...
and thanks so much for stopping by. Enjoy your explorations!

. WHAT YOU'LL FIND HERE . . . |
| There are several distinct areas to this
site, covering different types of work. You'll find
an extensive Opera section, along with various
photography and theatre & dance sections that
show recent work plus what's in progress; Papermaking shows not
only how to make paper, but what happens to it afterwards; and the Words &
Music Shop offers more than just recommended reading and listening about the
topics found here - there's a whole lot of biographical / background information, too.

SPECIAL
FEATURES |
|
- There's ArtLetter, the
newsletter about ML Hart's appearances, new works, and her thoughts about how art relates
to our everyday lives. It's easy to sign up to be on the e-mail distribution and
news-update list from most major pages throughout the site - and please do!
- You can also connect to a series of pages in the About
the Artist section from most anywhere in the site, which includes gallery
and exhibition information; background; honors and awards; and more...
- Please visit the copyright
page - you see copyright notices on nearly every website around, but
what does it really mean? Here is an explanation of what it means to me as an
artist, and links to further information about the creation and protection of intellectual
property. Use these resources for your own education or use them as a terrific springboard
to get involved with a worthy cause.
- You'll find a mailbox on every page
...just click
on the image to bring up the letter form you can use to write Martha.
- On every major page, you'll find the ability
to translate a word or phrase into any one of several languages with just
a few mouse-moves, courtesy of the creative folks at InterTrans.
- And there are links to related
pages, people, companies, or information of interest scattered throughout, as well as
special links pages of colleagues and further web-surfing opportunities related to
photography, paper, art and life in general - for the real beauty of the WorldWideWeb is
not just finding out about information, but taking the chance to explore an ever-widening
circle of interconnected people, places, things, and ideas.
