ARTIST'S STATEMENT - Textures of Russia 1993

Russia is a land with an astonishing history, a land of extraordinary beauty and power - and a country overwhelmed by attempts to cope with the modern global community.

The serenity in these images, whether urban or rural, reflects the warm and strong nature of the Russian people, grounded by tradition and their religion. Here, all seems removed from the October 1993 upheaval that was brewing, as if looking back in time to a simpler and more ancient land.

These photographs were made on my second trip to Russia, during May 1993, along a river route north from Moscow to St Petersburg.
